New Academic Leaders Orientation

This two-day orientation is for individuals new to academic leadership at GW. The New Academic Leaders Orientation program will address a diverse range of topics, including GW Values, Shared Governance Principles, and guidance on the University's New Title IX and Prohibited Relationships Policies.

GW Police Chief James Tate will discuss campus safety for the fall semester, while the University Resilience team will touch on the resources across the Emergency Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Sustainability, and Advocacy and Support teams. Unconscious bias may be undermining even our most fervent desire to support the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. In this session, participants will explore the concept and meaning of unconscious bias, explore their own biases and lived experiences, and discuss strategies for combating unconscious bias in interactions with colleagues, staff, and students.

While many factors impact student experiences and  subsequently time to degree, this presentation focus on GW's undergraduate retention and graduation efforts including high impact practices and academic resources,  and ways in which faculty can support student success.

3:15 - 4:30 pm: Disability Support Services and Title IX: Basics & Best Practices for GW Leaders & Faculty

This session will provide new faculty and leaders with foundational knowledge on Disability Support Services and Title IX policies at GW. Participants will learn about the university's commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities, the resources available, and how to ensure an inclusive environment. Additionally, the session will cover anti-discrimination policies, the role of intent and impact in assessing complaints, and the responsibilities of each community member in preventing incidents. The special responsibilities of supervisors and the available complaint pathways and university resources will also be discussed.
